Microsoft pens landmark CDR deal for Biochar produced carbon removal credits

Microsoft has very ambitious commitments for its carbon footprint:

  • Carbon negative by 2030

  • Removing equivalent of all historical emissions by 2050

This includes scopes 1 through 3 so the amount of offset required to hit the mission statement is considerable so its not surprising to see such large scale deals going through.

At current metrics, Microsoft is estimated to have produced over 20 million MTCO2e in FY2024 and with the pace of AI related datacenter buildout, it's hard to imagine this burden reducing anytime soon. Whilst this deal is extremely large in size it only accounts for approximately 6% of the annual requirement without even taking into consideration the need to offset historical emissions.
